HOST COMMITTEE

2008 INTER-PACIFIC BAR ASSOCIATION CONFERENCE OPENS WINDOW TO THE FUTURE OF THE ASIA-PACIFIC ECONOMY

Event Opens April 27-30, 2008 at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza Hotel

April 21, 2008

LOS ANGELES - For the first time in 10 years, the Inter-Pacific Bar Association Annual Conference, themed “Many Borders, One World.™,” will be held in the United States, and the first time ever in Los Angeles. More than 700 business lawyers from 25 different jurisdictions will be welcomed by Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villargaosa and California State Controller John Chiang.

Chiang views California as a great investment. “Through its leadership and pension funds, the State has taken a leadership role in the movement toward energy investments in clean technology.” says Chiang. “The State also has embraced diversity to its advantage by finding, harnessing and tapping into a wide range of talents that help create economic opportunities.”

In his welcoming remarks, Controller Chiang will discuss California’s plans to become an early and significant investor in clean technology. He will also explore how diversity in investing is not only the right thing to do, but also a smart move to provide the State with a competitive advantage.

Conference Keynotes and Panels

The 2008 Conference will offer 38 plenary and educational programs organized by the IPBA's 19 substantive law committees and the 2008 Conference Host Committee, which includes representatives from some of the world’s most respected law firms. The keynote presentation will feature AEG President and CEO Timothy J. Leiweke who will demonstrate how entertainment in today’s global market has no boundaries.

Alexander L. Cappello, Chairman and CEO of Cappello Capital Corp., will moderate a plenary panel about the future of the Asia-Pacific economy. He notes, “With massive amounts of capital, unparralled economic growth, and increasing clout on the world political stage, Asia has evolved into the most dynamic region in the world today.” Cappello’s panelists include:
  • Carl Joseph Chen, General Partner and Co-Founder of Temple Honor LLC
  • Robert A. Eckert, Chairman of the Board and CEO of Mattel, Inc.
  • George Lee, Chairman, Founder, and Managing Member of PMK, Inc., SView LLC
  • William H. Overholt, Director, RAND Center for Asia Pacific Policy
  • Kantathi Suphamongkhon, 39th Minister of Foreign Affairs of Thailand

The Association of Corporate Counsel and IPBA are co-sponsors of an in-house counsel panel which will examine the cross-border practice of law in the international context, where rules are difficult to interpret across country lines.

“This is an unsurpassed opportunity to remain current on developments in business law and practice in the Asia-Pacific region,” says Gerold Libby, 2008 Conference Chair and partner in the Los Angeles office of Holland & Knight, LLP. “The educational and social programs will further enhance professional relationships with colleagues throughout the world.”
