HOST COMMITTEE

WELCOME ADDRESS

Antonio R. Villaraigosa
Mayor of the City of Los Angeles
The City of Los Angeles is the second largest city in the United States. The County of Los Angeles is larger in population than 42 of the 50 states of the United States and is home to 10 million people, one-quarter of all residents of California. Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, the 41st mayor of the City of Los Angeles, will share his views regarding the increasingly important role played by the 1.4 million Asians and Asian Americans who live in Los Angeles County. He will also address recent developments in the major industries of Los Angeles County, including international trade, supported by the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, motion picture and television program production, music recording and production, aerospace, and professional services.

John Chiang
Controller of the State of California
State Controller John Chiang was elected in November 2006 as the Chief Fiscal Officer of California, the world’s eighth largest economy. Mr. Chiang oversees more than US $100 billion in annual receipts and disbursements of public funds, uses his broad audit authority to uncover fraud and abuse of taxpayer dollars, and provides financial guidance to local governments, schools and special districts. Mr. Chiang serves on 76 state boards and commissions that significantly impact California’s economic health in areas such as development, employment, housing and the environment. Mr. Chiang chairs the Franchise Tax Board, the committee that provides financial oversight of California’s multi-billion dollar stem cell program, and also is the current chair of the California State Lands Commission. Mr. Chiang serves as a trustee of the California Public Employees’ Retirement System and the California State Teachers’ Retirement System. CalPERS and CalSTRS, the nation’s largest public pension funds, have combined portfolios worth more than US $400 billion.

Controller Chiang sees California as a great investment. Through its leadership and pension funds, the State has taken a leadership role in the movement toward energy investments in clean technology. The State also has embraced diversity to its advantage by finding, harnessing and tapping into a wide range of talents that help create economic opportunities. During Controller Chiang's welcome remarks, he will discuss how California plans to become an early and significant investor in clean technology and explore how diversity in investing is not just the right thing to do, but the smart thing to do because it gives the State a competitive advantage.
